Halloween is fast approaching so we hope you have a killer costume that will scare the pants off your friends – but make sure your snacks dress up for the occasion too. When it comes to Halloween or any event for that matter, it can be hard to avoid unhealthy food. So, that’s why we’ve listed some healthy snacks that are really easy to make.
Add a bit of nutrition to your Halloween diet with these five spooky treats:
Ghost eggs and spade soldiers
Start off your day with ghost eggs and spade soldiers. It’s a great Halloween-themed breakfast for your kids as it will give them lots of energy. These are regular egg and soldiers with a twist.
How you make it:
Pop your eggs in a pan of boiling water and toast your bread. Once toasted, cut the bread into spade shapes and boil the egg for about five minutes or until the yolk is perfectly runny. Next, put the eggs in egg cups and decorate them with scary faces. Then finally, crack open the tops and dunk the bread spades.
Eyeball pasta
Eyeball pasta is the perfect way to get everyone in the Halloween spirit. Before you go out trick-or-treating with your kids, serve this up for dinner. Create eyeballs of different sizes for a ghoulish meal that’ll set the mood for the night.
How you make it:
Slice up string cheese and cut olives in half lengthwise. Cook the pasta according to package directions with a serving of your favourite pasta sauce. Once cooked, arrange the olives on top to make the eyeballs. For extra effect pick up some green pasta (it is dried with spinach leaves, giving it that green shade – no dye or anything nasty like that)!
Monster Mouth
You’ll need two apples, peanut butter and marshmallows to make monster mouths. This treat might sound like it will be high in sugar, but you’ll also get a great amount of protein and fibre from the apples and peanut butter.
How you make it:
Cut the apples into slices and wedges, and spread peanut butter onto the pieces to connect them together. Place a line of marshmallows into the peanut butter to make the teeth. The result is a very ghoulish treat!
Carrot fingers and hummus
Carrot fingers and hummus make for a creepy-looking appetizer. They are very healthy and if you’re hosting a Halloween party, they are perfect for a healthy but tasty option to take pride of place at your buffet table.
How you make it:
Firstly, trim your carrots according to a typical length of fingers and cut the tip of each finger to be slightly rounded. Use some hummus dip to stick an almond-sliced fingernail on the tips of each carrot. Once complete, stick the fingers in the hummus dip.
Spooky Banana Ghosts
Banana ghosts are a fun Halloween treat and only take a few minutes to make, requiring very little effort. All you need is peanut butter, raisins and of course, bananas. Get creative and bring some spook to your home with these banana ghosts.
How you make it:
Grab a few bananas and slice them into halves. Then, add three dots of peanut butter to each of the banana slices. Place raisins on the dots to make two eyes and a mouth.
