Everyone needs time to unwind, relax and escape from the stresses of everyday life. It’s crucial for your peace of mind, but it can be tough when you’re raising kids to find that time. The key thing to remember is you are more than just a great mother, you’re a human being, and you deserve more free time than 26 minutes each day! Here’s how to get your share as a mum:

Set boundaries

It’s important that you communicate to your children about your personal values and stick to them. It’s a good idea to teach your kids that your room is your private space, not a family room and that they should leave you alone at certain times. A great rule for young kids is that you always knock first on the door. Teaching your kids about personal space will make it the norm for them, allowing you to have more free time.

Take time out

Give yourself a time-out every now and again. This doesn’t mean block out your family, but making it clear that a 20-minute nap, or reading a book is sacred time. As your kids get older, they’ll understand the importance of ‘me-time’. But teach your children early so they grow up with the knowledge.

Arrange to get out of the house without the kids

Why not arrange a day out with your partner or friend once a month, without the kids? You could get a neighbour or a family member to look after your children, or consider hiring a babysitter. Use this time wisely and be creative with what you do. Visit an art gallery, a museum, or go on a walking tour. Just do what you really enjoy! The point is that it keeps you fresh, happy and energised. Maybe a monthly trip to the cinema or a favourite restaurant?

Try something new

Sometimes you’ve just got to get out there and give something new a shot. Be sure to explore new options and hobbies. Maybe you could join an evening class to study a subject that interests you, or attend a local exhibition. Consider joining a yoga studio that offers on-site child care. Perhaps a dance class? There’s plenty of new activates that you can try!
